The scrollytelling ‘Bream – the trend-setters’ showcases the work of the Environmental Specimen Bank and explains how fish can be used to track the levels of pollutants in our environment. For decades, the Environmental Specimen Bank has been testing bream from German waters for environmental toxins, thereby helping to protect both people and nature.

The Environmental Specimen Bank allows the scientific community to travel back in time—and to address environmental policy questions relevant to both the present and the future. Since the 1980s, scientists have been collecting samples—including those from fish, mammals, plants, and even humans—to help future generations better understand environmental changes.
