Ethoxyquin
EQ; 6-Ethoxy-2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline; formula: C14H19NO; CAS Registry Number: 91-53-2
An additive in feed
Ethoxyquin (EQ) is used as antioxidant in feed to prevent lipid oxidation. Beside its use as antioxidant EQ is also used as pesticide. In the EU the use of EQ as additive in feed was allowed until 2017 and the use as pesticide was allowed until 2011.
In this timeframe EQ residues in food derived from animals (especially fish and eggs) should be expected.
In 2022 European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) was not able to finalize the risk assessment for the use of EQ because of the known contamination of EQ with p-phenetidine (a precursor of EQ). p-phenetidine is suspected to have mutagenic and carcinogenic properties.
