Zehren (km 96)
Northernmost sampling site of the German upper course of the river Elbe
The sampling site Zehren extends between river kilometres 83 and 98 and runs through the landscape protection area Elbtal (Elb valley) north of the city of Meißen.
This river sections is still part of the upper reaches of the Elbe. The sampling site includes the marina of Meißen.
The width of the Elbe in this section varies between 100 and 200 metres, the bed is straightened and permanently reinforced. At river kilometre 95 an oxbow diverges from the Elbe which is separated from the main stream for some time of the year. Several rivers enter the Elbe in the area of the sampling site.
The surrounding land is characterized by agriculture. The area along the river banks is used as grassland and meadow. At the adjacent sites the river banks are reinforced by stone walls as flood protection measure.
