Saartal
Core zone of the Saarland industrial region along the major waterway Saar
This sub-area comprises the central part of the Saarland conurbation. It stretches along the valley of the Saar from the French border at Saarguemines and the barrage of Güdingen in the southeast to the barrage of Rehlingen downstream of the industrial town Dillingen.
The area is characterized by the dramatic change from an industrial region with coal, iron and steel industries to a service region with emphasis on metal-, automotive- and electronics industries.
In the 1980s, the Saar was widened to serve as waterway for large ships. The sediment still carries the legacy of the heavy industries of the past.
