Calcium
Formula: Ca; CAS Registry Number: 7440-70-2
Ubiquitous alkaline earth metal, constituent of many minerals
The metal is used in metal working industry. Commercially more important, however, are Ca-components which are applied e.g. in building industry, glass production, chemical and pharmaceutical industry, agriculture, forestry and steel industry.
Calcium is an essential element for all organisms. Among many other functions it is the most relevant material used in mineralization of bones, shells, and corals.
Calcium contents in plants depend on the respective soils. In animals, Ca levels are regulated by homoeostasis.
